How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is in another location.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of audi car key replacement that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the here RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.
A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easily accessible, especially in the case of a Bosch model, like ours. audi spare key If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an option.
5. Tachometer
A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection advanced key audi on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It audi a1 key replacement should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is a common part across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
